The government of Pakistan is focusing on Thar coal-based power project to reduce the burden of imported fuel in power generation. The Thar power project at Block-1 will generate 1,320 megawatts (MW) of electricity, and Thal-Nova Power at Block-II will add 330 megawatts to the national electricity supply. These power projects have been successfully achieved to the operational level with the help of the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) and Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB) from 5th and 17th February 2023, respectively. Completing the projects is another China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project achievement.
Four Thar coal-based projects will generate 2,640 MW and save 550 billion rupees annually by reducing fuel import bills. Another Thar coal-based power project of 660 MW is designed to operate at Port Qasim. Coal-based power projects will fill the electricity supply shortage, provide employment opportunities, develop the region, and reduce import costs.
Power division has suggested 10th March 2023 for the official inauguration of the projects by Prime Minister Shahbaz sharif. PM’s Principal Secretary said he agreed to inaugurate these power projects; the time and venue will be announced later.
