Ferrous Metal
What is Ferrous Metal?
Ferrous metals contain iron. A ferrous metal is made up of iron and other metals to give the ferrous properties required.
Although iron on its own is usually mentioned as a ferrous metal, the term really relates to any metal compounds that have iron in them.
To test if a metal is ferrous or not, the valance is measured. If Valence of +2 its mean that is Ferrous Metal.
Types of Ferrous Metal
The most common type of ferrous metals around now is:
- Steel
- Alloy Steel
- Carbon steel
- Cast iron
- Wrought iron
There are many other forms of ferrous metal, but the above are the most widely used in the modern age.
Which Metals Are Ferrous?
Some common ferrous metals include steel; steel and iron these metals are prized for their lastingness and sturdiness steel – also referred to as structure steel – may be a staple within the housing industry and is employed within the tallest skyscrapers and longest bridges.
Ferrous metals also are utilized in shipping containers, automobiles railroad, industrial piping, tracks and lots of domestic and commercial things. Ferrous metals have a high carbon content which generally makes them susceptible to rust when exposed to moisture.
There are two exceptions to the present rule: iron resists rust thanks to its purity and chrome steel is shielded from rust by the presence of chromium, the use of ferrous metals in your refrigerator door allows you to pin your shopping list on it with a magnet. Most ferrous metals are magnetic which makes them very useful for motor and electrical applications.
Ferrous Metals Uses:
Because these metals tend to be strong and durable, they have many uses in construction and engineering. You can find ferrous metals in large structures such as bridges and skyscrapers. Furthermore, ferrous metals are used in industrial piping, cars, shipping containers, tracks, railroad, and domestic tools.
Properties of Ferrous Metals
Ferrous metals may include a lot of different alloying elements. Some examples are chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium. Those give ferrous steels material properties that make them widely used in engineering.
A list of ferrous metal properties:
- Durable
- Recyclable
- A silver-like color
- Usually magnetic
- Great tensile strength
- Low resistance to corrosion
- Good conductors of electricity
These qualities make them usable in constructions. On top of that, they are utilized in making tools, pipelines, containers, vehicle engines, cutlery, automobiles etc.
Ferrous Metals Examples
All of them have different specifications, resulting in a variety of applications. To give a better overview,
we made a ferrous metals list:
- Non-Alloy Steels
- Nickel
- Vanadium
- Cast iron
- Low Carbon Steel
- Silicon
- Molybdenum
- High Carbon Steel
- Manganese
- Medium Carbon Steel
- Chromium
- Alloy Steels and the
- Alloying Elements
- Titanium
